The Mixed Reds hails from ancient vines from 1887, planted traditionally to 14 different varieties, from old neighbors’ cuttings at Peugh vineyard. These gnarly, head-trained vines, scattered ten feet apart, are dry-farmed Zinfandel, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Negrette, Malvasia Nera, Barbera, a handful of unknown white vines maybe—Palomino or a mutation of Gewurtztraminer or something completely different. This broad mixing of plantings that was commonplace for decades in early California viticulture. The true field blend contributes to an overall lively red fruit and spice inflected character with distinct depth and complex variety of vibrant fruit flavors in the final wine. 14.3% abv.
